Gaining Experience

COVID Testing Site Positions – Hiring ASAP
• The Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department is setting up a new COVID testing site at the corner of Antelope Parkway and O St. (a few blocks from campus). They are seeking applications for part-time COVID testing assistants.
• The testing site will be open 8:30am-4:15pm and hours will be flexible with students’ schedules; pay is between $20-25/hour; training will be provided on site the first few weeks (no experience necessary); the job duties will be swabbing and properly obtaining samples and delivering the samples to those running the lab equipment. Some outdoor work will be required while performing swabs.

Rural Fellows Program
• Rural Fellows is a unique program designed to connect college students to rural Nebraska communities. Student pairs move into the rural community, for a 10-week period during the summer, to complete community-identified projects. Past projects have ranged from economic development, workforce development, tourism, community planning, education, mental health, and much more. We are excited that you are interested in participating as a host community during the summer of 2022. Please complete the following application to help us know about your interested projects and potential students.

Project Horseshoe Farm
• Project Horseshoe Farm offers Community Health Fellowship programs in Alabama and California. Alumni consistently express how transformative their Fellowship experience has been, and Fellows go to some of the top medical schools, graduate programs, and nonprofit organizations across the U.S.
• This upcoming year, HSF is offering our traditional Gap-Year Fellowship, which will begin June of 2022 and finish July of 2023 at the Greensboro, Marion, and Pomona sites. For applicants who are available and interested, we are also offering a 6-month Fellowship opportunity in Greensboro from January through July of 2022. It will be shorter, but similar in experience to the full year Fellowship.

Volunteer Experience (Non-Profit in Residence) Week of January 24th – 28th
• Tuesday, January 25th, 11am-1pm, Catholic Social Services
o To perform the Works of Mercy in response to the call of God. Working together, we will build and grow #HopeInTheGoodLife.
o Volunteer opportunities exist to distribute food, assist refugees in transitioning to Nebraska and help with administrative work.

• Wednesday, January 26th, 11am-1pm, Educare of Lincoln
o Educare's mission is to establish a high-quality, one-stop community learning center for at-risk children and families; implementing specialized learning environments, which develop children academically and socially, empowering them to become productive members of society through research and evidence-based practices.
o Educare Lincoln is an Early Childhood School for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years of age. At Educare, students can sign up to volunteer and assist with infant room, admin support and writing birthday cards for youth.

• Thursday, January 27th, 11am-1pm, Bridges to Hope
o Bridges to Hope is a service to men and women soon to be or recently released from incarceration and are making the transition to a productive life outside of the cell. A first step back into the community requires a place to live and items to set up a home. Bridges to Hope provides basic household furnishings, clothing and personal hygiene products at no cost to the men and women we serve.
o Volunteer opportunities are available to sort donations, organize warehouse, assist with developing marketing materials and hosting fundraises efforts.

• Friday, January 28th, 11am-1pm, Serve Nebraska
o Uniting Americans together to tackle some of the most challenging issues that face our communities while building leadership, professional development and earning benefits like a living allowance and an education award.
o Apply to serve as an Americorps member or vista and perform indirect service at a local nonprofit organization located in Nebraska. Americorp members earn a stipend and educational award.

MCAT Workshop
February 2nd, 2022 from 4:00 to 5:00 pm via Zoom
• The MCAT is an important piece of your application to medical school. We’ll review the content of the exam, discuss considerations for when to take it, and share preparation strategies and resources.

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)
Application Deadline: February 5th, 2022
SHPEP is a FREE six-week national academic summer enrichment program aimed at better positioning underrepresented students for acceptance into advanced degree, health professions programs. UNMC, along with multiple other medical schools across the country, will offer this program next summer. We encourage any Freshmen or Sophomores to consider applying  for a seat with the Summer Health Professions Program (SHPEP) next summer.
• The application is open now and closes February 5th.

LEND Internship in Disability Healthcare
• The LEND Pipeline Trainee program is a part-time training program for undergraduate students interested in gaining experience in the field of providing healthcare services to disabled persons. See the attached flyer for more information. This healthcare leadership program allows you to have a directed experience learning about healthcare for people with disabilities. Clinical observation and shadowing will be available. You can complete the internship remotely, but would have some activities to attend periodically in Omaha. They are hoping for applications ASAP.
