Educator Field School: Connecting the Classroom to Nebraska’s Wetlands
June 16-18 at Niobrara Valley Preserve (Johnstown, Nebraska)
What is the Wetland Educator Field School?
Field school is an opportunity for teachers to get outside and learn experientially about Nebraska’s ecosystems. This is a free two-day immersive educator workshop presented by Nebraska Game and Parks educators, biologists, and partners. This year we will be hosted by the amazing Niobrara Valley Preserve near Johnstown, NE. The Niobrara Valley Preserve sits along the Niobrara River and features prairie landscapes where bison roam and hundreds of bird and plant species thrive. Participants will explore riverine wetlands and prairie-water connections through hands-on science experiences while kayaking the Niobrara River and do activities like water quality testing, community science projects, nature journaling and inquiry-based natural resource activities.
Who should attend?
This specific workshop is designed for current formal educators teaching 6th-12th grades across Nebraska.
What will participants gain?
Each participant will receive a wealth of knowledge to use when incorporating local ecology into their curriculum that is built upon their personal experiences. Along the way, educators will have the chance to offer feedback on educational aquatic ecology content that is being created by NGPC for use in the classroom. Participants will also leave with numerous educational resources including field guides and activities based on the aquatic ecosystems found in Nebraska. Additionally, participating educators will have the opportunity to apply for funding to bring their students to local wetlands for two NGPC-led scaffolded field trip experiences in the fall of 2026.
What is the cost to attend?
This two-day immersive workshop is FREE and includes all meals and lodging. Each participant will receive a $250 stipend to compensate for travel and participation in this workshop.
How can I participate?
This workshop is limited to 12 educators, so apply today and feel free to share with others! The application period will close on March 22, and chosen participants will be notified by early April. Learn more and apply.
