Explore and Understand: Homelessness

Homelessness is defined as the situation of an individual, family, or community that is without stable, safe, permanent, appropriate housing, or the immediate means and ability of acquiring it. Those experiencing homelessness might be living in a place not meant for human habitation, in an emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or are exiting an institution where they temporarily resided.

Salvation Army: Feb. 13

The Salvation Army serves the Lincoln area through various areas of service, including feeding programs, youth development, Pathway of Hope. Students have the opportunity to assist with organizing items and distributing items to guests on Monday, February 13 between 2:00pm and 4:00pm.

Good Neighbor Community Center: Feb. 14

The Good Neighbor Community Center provides basic and emergency needs to low-income individuals or anyone in need of our services. Students have the opportunity to assist with organizing items and distributing items to guests on Tuesday, February 14 between 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Friendship Home: Feb. 15

Friendship Home’s mission exists to support, shelter and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Students will have the opportunity to assist with organizing donations and prepare materials for workshops on Wednesday, February 15 between 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Fresh Start: Feb. 16

Fresh Start empowers women experiencing homelessness to change their lives by recognizing and using their strengths to overcome barriers to self-sufficiency. Students will have the opportunity to assemble tie-blankets on Thursday, February 16th between 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

People City Mission: Feb. 17

People City Mission provides homeless shelter housing for men, women, and children in the Lincoln area. Students will have the opportunity to organize donations and distribute items to guests on Friday, February 17th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

We are inviting Students to Submit a Story of Engagement before the end of every month so we can include them in future volunteer digest newsletters. The Story of Engagement blog will recognize Huskers who have participated in helping a nonprofit either through volunteering, raising proceeds, or conducting research.
