You can help your student complete the semester while keeping stress in check.

The end of the semester and final exams can be a time of tremendous stress for students. As they are working hard to achieve personal academic goals, students may feel uncertain about returning home and the potential loss of freedoms they’ve come to know. Follow these tips to help support your student through this difficult time.
When it comes to academic challenges, encourage your young scholar to:

  • Stay positive.
A cheerful outlook and positive affirmations can help prevent self-sabotage and boost problem-solving abilities.
  • Exercise.
Endorphins and serotonin released in exercise can improve mood and help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Work ahead.
Procrastination can cause additional stress. Encourage your student to start chipping away at a paper by starting early or building a study plan to prevent cramming.
  • Do something that they love.
It’s always easier to commit to a project when it brings personal satisfaction. If your student does not enjoy their path of study, encourage them to see an academic advisor or visit a professional in CAPS to discuss their concerns.

As for your student’s return home, be mindful that they have changed since they left home. You should be patient and engage with them in shared decision-making; and above all, be flexible and seek to understand. Open communication between you and your student will help you both navigate most changes.

As always, if there are any concerns, encourage your student to reach out to CAPS for help and support at 402-472-7450.
