Mid-semester can bring anxiety about grades or depressed mood if students are feeling “stuck” with their level of understanding in the course material. Professionals at CAPS understand how difficult it can be if they are not doing as well as they would like or if they're having a hard time adjusting to their classes.

CAPS also understands that it can be difficult for you as a parent to see your student struggle. So, what can you as a parent do to support the young scholar at a time like this?

  1. Encourage them to reach out to their professor and let them know about the challenges that they are experiencing or attend office hours to increase their understanding of class material.
  2. Encourage them to talk to their academic adviser who can help them to come up with a plan to better manage their situation or to utilize academic supports that exist on campus.
  3. Encourage them to check in with their emotional needs and self-care needs as they manage ongoing stressors throughout the remainder of the fall semester.
  4. You can check in with your student to see if there are any specific ways you can provide support throughout the week such as being someone they can talk to or someone who can provide accountability.
  5. Provide words of encouragement to remind them that they are capable of success.

Parents should talk with their students about getting mobilized and reaching out to resources that are available to them. CAPS can help them overcome emotional struggles that can get in the way of their academics. To schedule an appointment or for more information, CAPS is available at (402) 472-7450.
