Forty-five students opted for adventure and learning during the annual Fall Break in mid-October by traveling with Campus Recreation’s outdoor adventures (OA) trips. Participants chose from three adventures: whitewater kayaking in Iowa, rock climbing in Arkansas, and backpacking in Oklahoma.
Adventure trips offer students enrolled in OA academic classes a hands-on field experience, as well as a chance for additional students to get out and adventure along with them. Participating students are challenged physically and mentally in a new environment.
The Oklahoma backpacking adventure explored the Ouachita National Forest over five days. Twenty students practiced their recently-acquired skills, including map and compass navigation, fire building, water purification, backcountry cooking, and leave-no-trace principles. Although it may sound like “all work and no play”, participants enjoy an energetic, easy-paced and non-conventional learning environment. Many stories and laughs are shared on the trail and around the campfire.
Campus Recreation offers a constantly-rotating schedule of adventure trips every semester - that include single-day excursions and 2-3 day weekend adventures – in addition to the week-long trips. No prior experience is needed for students to participate; instructors accompany each group and teach along the way. Gear, transportation, and meals are provided too.
