The University Health Center (UHC) continually looks for opportunities to adjust its operations and services to better serve UNL’s student population.
Here are a few ways UHC has enhanced its care this semester based on student/parent feedback and internal innovation.
Improved Check-in Process
Since Aug. 15, UHC has hired three additional front desk personnel so staff can process patient check-ins more efficiently. This has moved most phone calls away from the front desk, allowing calls to be answered in a timelier manner.
Cold Care Bags
Whenever students visit UHC exhibiting signs/symptoms of a cold or flu, they will receive a free cold care bag equipped with the essentials needed to cope with their illness:
• Cough drops
• Kleenex
• Hand sanitizer
• Packet of instant soup
• Herbal tea bag
• Chapstick
• Cold care tips
• Information about how to receive free 24-hour doses of ibuprofen and other over-the-counter medications at the UHC Pharmacy
Election Response
Following the election, many students experienced intense feelings of fear, anger and anxiety. Recognizing the student body needed extra support during this time, UHC responded accordingly and became a safe place for those who needed it. The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team released an official statement that was shared on the UHC website and social media accounts, encouraging students to schedule an appointment if they needed to talk through their feelings regarding the election outcome. In addition, the CAPS director created a blog post that listed strategies to help students manage their feelings post-election. Both communication pieces were widely appreciated and shared on social media by the student population.
Direct Appointment Scheduling
Beginning Dec. 19, students who sign up for the One Chart | PATIENT portal using the activation code given to them at their first appointment can schedule future appointments at UHC’s Medical Clinic online. Appointment blocks for illnesses, injuries and other follow-up issues—excluding physicals or procedures—are available for most providers through the portal. If available appointment openings online do not fit with students’ schedules, they can call UHC at 402.472.5000 to schedule an appointment for another time.
UHC encourages parents and students to continue to give their honest feedback. Comments and suggestions are accepted in-person at UHC, via email at uhc@unl.edu or via phone at 402.472.5000.
