Course Description :
Students on this trip will place into a French language course at a French language institute. They will earn 3 credit-hours of transfer credit for this intensive French language course. In addition, students will take FREN 398 (3 credit-hours), a course on the history, culture, and literature of the French-speaking Caribbean region, with faculty leader Dr. Julia Frengs. Taught in English, this course will expose students to the contemporary socio-political issues arising from the complicated yet fascinating history of the region. In addition to earning 6 credit-hours toward a major or minor in French and/or Global Studies, students will fulfill their ACE 9 requirement through this experience. Participants will stay in a residence hall, where they will have access to three meals a day, snacks, laundry services, and free WiFi.

Activities and Excursions :
On two of the four weekends in Martinique, students will be taken on excursions to different parts of the island, including the famous volcano, Mount Pelée, where they will have the opportunity to picnic, hike, and learn about the eruption of 1902 that devastated the quaint town of Saint Pierre. Students will also visit a former plantation, where they will learn about the history of slavery in the Caribbean and about the process of turning the property into a rum distillery. Students will visit with local chefs and artists, go to an open-air market, and tour an eco-museum. In their free time, participants can practice yoga on the beach, snorkel, learn to kite surf or stand-up paddle, and more.
