New finals policy at the digital learning center begins in the fall

As the Digital Learning Center experiences a significant uptick in demand during finals week, it is introducing a policy update to ensure efficient use of the facilities. Beginning with the fall semester, the DLC will enforce a rule disallowing multiple attempt exams during finals week. This change addresses the current constraints of the exam registration system that necessitate completion of one attempt before scheduling the next and prohibits more than one attempt of the same exam on a single day.

By limiting exams to a single attempt during finals week, the DLC aims to streamline the registration experience, enabling a larger number of students to successfully reserve their exam times. We acknowledge this modification may necessitate a change in how exams are prepared and administered, and we are dedicated to assisting faculty and students as they adapt to this policy update.

Faculty are able to transition their exams to a single attempt as early as this semester. To change an existing exam to one attempt, email dlc@unl.edu or Miranda McCown at mmccown2@nebraska.edu. This step is voluntary for the current term; the official policy update will be in place for the fall semester.

To help with increased finals week exam demands, the DLC advises faculty to take advantage of the full examination period, which starts the Saturday before finals week and concludes on Friday at noon. Expanding the exam window maximizes students' opportunities to secure a time slot.

If DLC capacities are reached and an exam cannot be scheduled during finals week, faculty have several alternatives. These include modifying a Canvas Quiz to enable Respondus Monitor and disabling IP filters, permitting remote testing with Respondus LockDown Browser. Alternatively, faculty may instruct students to use their laptops in a supervised setting with a password-protected Canvas Quiz, foregoing the need for Respondus LockDown Browser.

For additional guidance on secure testing options or questions regarding the new policy, contact Miranda McCown, the DLC exam commons manager, at mmccown2@nebraska.edu.
