Do you know a standout undergraduate student — one who is especially inquisitive, engaged, and well prepared for graduate study and/or a leadership career?

The Undergraduate Research and Fellowships seeks referrals of juniors and graduating seniors who may be interested in applying for awards for research, public service, graduate study, or English teaching abroad.

Popular awards include the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and graduate leadership scholarships (e.g., Marshall, Rhodes, Knight-Hennessy Scholars). These high-profile, competitive external awards provide funding and life-changing opportunities across a range of disciplines and interests, including leadership development programs and highly engaged alumni communities.

Fellowships reviewers look for candidates with a highly-focused sense of purpose; a record of contributions to original, creative work or research; and the ability to share perspectives and form lasting friendships within a fellowships community.

UNL students and alumni are frequently successful in application to these awards. Husker alumni Carson Haberyan and Brigid Toomey are abroad in France as 2025-26 Fulbright U.S. Students. Haberyan is an English teaching assistant, and Toomey is studying cellular and molecular biology at Grenoble Alpes University. Husker graduate student Jillian Kurovski is also a 2025-26 Fulbright U.S. Student, conducting biological sciences research in South Korea.

Graduate student Peyton Kullman, and alumni Dakota Andrews, Emily Fitzpatrick, and Sukaina Al-Hamedi are 2025-26 NSF Graduate Research Fellows.

Undergraduate applicants for these awards participate in advising over the summer. Interested students will be provided access to Canvas advising workspace resources and personalized application materials feedback.

Interested undergraduates can attend an upcoming information session or drop-in hours. They can also book an advising appointment in Student Success Hub for help with developing personalized plans.

Campus community members with questions can contact Courtney Santos, director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, at courtney.santos@unl.edu.

Graduate students may request feedback on fellowship applications through Consultation Services in Graduate Studies.
