On Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 7:30pm in the Nebraska Union Auditorium, you are invited to a talk by Colonel David W. Sutherland, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Easter Seals Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services. Colonel Sutherland will present, “The Inspiration of Courage: The Perspective of Reality.” His presentation will feature a discussion on the valor that he has seen through his military experience and highlight the challenges that many of our veterans and their families face as they transition from the military into our community.
While not everyone may have a relative or a close friend that served in the military, it is important to remember that every service member came from our communities and that they all will return to our communities. All of us have an obligation to better understand each other. Our student veteran population of approximately 700 possess valuable characteristics and attributes that empower them with great potential to serve and lead in our communities. Despite this potential, veterans struggle during their reintegration back into the community which can impact their performance as a student. The reality is that having a conversation with a veteran and investing the time to mentor and lead by those already within the civilian community, instructors can have a profound effect on a veteran’s reintegration and subsequently, their academic success.
