Upcoming Workshops on Supporting Students’ Diverse Needs

All faculty and staff are invited to participate in two fall workshops focused on supporting students’ diverse needs. Sponsored by the offices of the Executive Vice Chancellor, Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS), and First Generation Nebraska, these interactive workshops will promote discussion about how to support students’ diverse needs in and beyond the classroom. Both workshops are free and registration is not required. Information about the workshop topics, dates, and speakers’ bios include the following:

Friday, October 5 7:30 am-9:00 am, Kauffman Great Hall

“Retaining Students of Color at a Predominately White Institution” with UNL Alum Juan M. Izaguirre

Juan M. Izaguirre currently serves as the Associate Director for the Weppner Center for LEAD and Service-Learning at Florida Atlantic University. He primarily oversees the Elite Owls Leadership and Service Ambassadors, the Lead and Serve Workshops, and the WeLead: Diversity Matters Student Leadership Symposium amongst the programs within the department. Prior to this, he worked within the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs where he oversaw the academic and diversity programs, the LGBTQA Resource Center, Interfaith programs and student organizations.

Juan has been in higher education for 15 years, having worked in various capacities such as Multicultural Affairs, Admissions, and Fraternity & Sorority Life. He also worked with the academic program HAWK Link, an academic retention program for first year students. He holds a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Nebraska. He is a current doctoral student in the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology within the College of Education at FAU. Juan was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and raised in Lincoln, NE. He is the proud father of Cortez and Cataleya Izaguirre.

“A Conversation on Identity and Cross-Cultural Understanding” with UNL Alum Dr. Morgan McCain.

Morgan McCain, Ph.D. is a Nebraska alum and currently works at the University of Houston's Counseling and Psychological Services as a Licensed Psychologist and Group Coordinator. Dr. McCain has worked with college students for nearly a decade and has a passion for working with individuals with marginalized identities. At Nebraska, she participated in the McNair Scholars program, African Peoples' Union, Melvin Jones Scholars Learning Community, Mortar Board National Honor Society, and served as President for the Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated when it was chartered in 2008. Dr. McCain also worked with the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy throughout the majority of her undergraduate and graduate tenure.
