Journalism Intern - University Communication (Lincoln, NE)

The Office of University Communication (UComm) at UNL is seeking a Journalism Intern to assist with various projects.

Two projects have been identified for immediate need:
1.) National news survey. We will interview college deans and professors about upcoming research and other opportunities for national news. We will build a data base/spreadsheet to identify priority projects and a long-term calendar of upcoming opportunities. We will begin identifying markets and writers and developing pitches.
2.) Expert list: We will review and refresh UComm’s online expert list, culling outdated resources, listing new resources and crafting copy to describe expertise in an engaging and appealing way.

Qualifications:
> Energetic, self-starter, work ethic
> Adept with spreadsheet or other appropriate software
> Note-taking and record-keeping skills
> Interest in journalism or public relations career

Successful candidate will gain experience in interviewing experts, identifying potential pitches and developing public relations strategies. Successful candidate will gain experience in writing tight and engaging copy. Successful candidate will build relationships with leaders and academic researchers at UNL. Successful candidate will work closely with seasoned professional with 30 years’ experience as a news reporter and 6 years’ experience in media relations.

Interviewing and writing experience is not required, but successful candidate should be prepared to learn.

Minimum of 5 hours per week, more hours available if desired. Pay range $10 -$12 an hour depending upon experience; part-time during 2019-20 school year. Opportunity for continued student employment if successful.
