UNL Mathematics

Hello Math and Data Science Majors,

I hope you are doing well as we progress through the 4th week of the spring semester. I expect that your first round of exams or papers are getting close to coming due in your classes, so please don't forget to reach out for help rather than stressing out.

I want to talk about the University Career and Internship fairs happening this week at UNL. Each semester, University Career Services brings in employers and others with opportunities to hold a career and internship fair over three to five days. After the sending out of this newsletter, the following Career and Internships fairs will take place:

University Career + Internship Fairs – DAY 1
Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024 | 12-4 PM | Nebraska Union | Booth Map
• Economics, Banking & Finance
• Government, Policy, Public Administration & Law
• Health & Wellness
• Human Services & Non-Profit

University Career + Internship Fairs – DAY 2
Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024 | 12-4 PM | Nebraska Union | Booth Map
• Entertainment, Media & Design
• Computing, Software & Data Analytics
• Management, Human Resources, Marketing & Sales

University Career + Internship Fairs – DAY 3
Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024 | 12-4 PM | Nebraska Union | Booth Map
• Architecture, Engineering & Construction
• Science, Research & Development

Clearly, you cannot just walk into a career and internship fair and expect to be given an opportunity, so you need to be prepared for the fair. Here are some things you can do to help prepare yourself to attend the fair:

- See who is attending via Handshake (see the links above) and by checking out the fair booth map (see the links above), which has filters to identify employers attending that fit your career interests. *Booth locations subject to change.
- Watch short career fair prep videos on conversation tips, resume hints, attire, and more.
- Access the Job and Internship Guide for help crafting resumes, finding opportunities and marketing yourself.
- Create a career fair outfit with Career Closet, Lavender Closet, and Husker Suit-Up.
- Get personalized assistance from our CAS Career Coach team.

The resources above are available all the time, so you can certainly prepare for next fair well in advance.

Regardless of your plans, I would strongly encourage you to attend the career and internship fairs as you will see what attending is like and have a chance to practice networking with employers. These skills will help you in the future when you need to market yourself to achieve your goals (even if you want to go to graduate school).

Historically, students from our College attend the career and internships fairs at lower rates than students from the other Colleges, and this needs to change if you and other students from our College want to gain experience in order to access opportunities. Remember, the CAS Career Coaches and I are here to help you achieve your goals, and we want you to attend the career and internship fairs.

Newsletter Feedback
If you ever have questions or feedback about anything in the weekly newsletter, please let me know by shooting me an email. Sometimes, it is difficult for me to know if these emails are actually being read and/or found useful.

Best wishes, Doug
