The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) is now accepting nominations for the 2028 Emma Castelnuovo Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the practice of mathematics education. The award honors contributions that align with ICMI’s mission: advancing mathematics education across all levels and fostering reflection, collaboration, and exchange of ideas worldwide. Past winners have included organizations such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Named after pioneering Italian mathematics educator Emma Castelnuovo (1913-2014), the award highlights innovative and influential work in areas such as classroom teaching, curriculum development, instructional design, teacher education, and field projects with broad impact.

As a community, MTEP has built a strong record of collaborative initiatives in mathematics teacher preparation, with demonstrable influence on curriculum design, equity-focused instructional practices, and national conversations about mathematics education. These achievements position MTEP as a compelling potential nominee for this prestigious award.

I invite MTEP members to consider collaborating to nominate MTEP as an organization for the Emma Castelnuovo Award. Nominations require a summary statement, documentation of impact, supporting materials, and letters from stakeholders. The deadline is November 30, 2026, with the award to be announced at ICME-16 in Prague in July 2028.

If you are interested in helping to lead or support a nomination effort, please complete this interest form. This nomination is an opportunity to highlight MTEP’s contributions on an international stage and to celebrate the collective work of our community.
