Wendy Smith, Willa Cather research professor of mathematics is the new director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Center for Transformative Teaching effective January 9.
"Wendy's broad experience in education and passion for data-informed innovation will enable them to hit the ground running in this role," said Amy Goodburn, senior associate vice chancellor and dean of undergraduate education. "Wendy is eager to collaborate with faculty, advance student success, and champion research-based teaching practices across campus."
Smith’s career began as a middle school mathematics teacher. They joined the UNL faculty in 2008 and became director of the Center for Science, Math and Computer Education in 2022. Smith's research focuses on transforming institutional cultures in ways that promote student success for all students, specifically PK-20 participation in mathematics, science, and computer science, as well as rural education, teacher professional development, and education leadership. Smith’s research has resulted in a substantial number of publications and nearly $50 million of National Science Foundation grants and other external funding.
"I'm excited to work with UNL's amazing instructional designers and instructors across disciplines to explore the use of technology, data, and research to transform instructional practices in all types of classes," said Smith.
The Center for Transformative Teaching collaborates with educators across departments and programs to promote evidence-based, inclusive, innovative, and effective teaching for all learners. Smith will provide leadership for the center and a team of dedicated instructional design staff to promote pedagogical and instructional design principles that support teachers in creating learning environments for student success.
Smith is a Husker alum, with a bachelor of science and master of arts in mathematics and a doctorate in educational studies from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
