Annual ‘Our Nebraska’ Events Celebrate Inclusion

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host ‘Our Nebraska,’ an annual week-long celebration of inclusion, March 6-10, 2018.

Events held during the week emphasize the theme of “Empowering Every Story” and encourage students, faculty and staff to learn about themselves while finding strength in individuality. All events are free and most include refreshments.

New this year, the ASUN Diversity and Inclusion Committee has partnered to host Friends Without Borders, a program focused on instilling lasting relationships between international and domestic students, as part of the week’s events.

Schedule of events:

  • Monday, March 5

    World Café Conversations — Similar to discussions at Husker Dialogues, these conversations invite students, faculty and staff to get to know more about themselves and those on campus around them. Coffee from The Mill and pastries provided. Sessions at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union, Centennial Room.

  • Tuesday, March 6

    Panel: Misconstrued Identities — Through a panel conversation, attendees will learn how to handle misconstrued identities and share strategies for educating others on identities. Lunch provided by Raising Cane’s. Begins at 11:30 a.m. in the College of Law Auditorium on East Campus.

  • Thursday, March 8

    Express Yourself Expo — Artists and performers will share personal stories about what defines them. Art exhibition and refreshments available at 6:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union, Heritage Room. Performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.

  • Friday, March 9

    Faculty/Staff Education Session — Presenter Cammy Watkins of Inclusive Communities will lead a 90-minute discussion on identity and facilitating difficult dialogue. Participants will consider how identity and culture impact one’s perspectives and interactions with others. The group will then discuss how identities can cause barriers to understanding those different than ourselves. Participants will discuss tips and tools on creative an inclusive culture in the classroom to promote constructive dialogue. Lastly, participants will practice how to navigate difficult conversations around identity. Session runs 9-10:30 a.m. in the Nebraska Union, Georgian Suite.

    Friends Without Borders: Movie Night — Hosted by the ASUN Diversity & Inclusion Committee, this event invites international and domestic students to get to know one another while watching the movie Marshall and enjoying snacks and games.

  • Saturday, March 10

    Friends Without Borders: Icebreakers & Capitol Tour — Hosted by the ASUN Diversity & Inclusion Committee, this event invites international and domestic students to get to know one another through partner games, icebreakers and a tour of the Nebraska State Capitol Building.
