Around the World with Coffee (AGRI 310): Connecting the Socio-Economic and Cultural Dimensions of Coffee (Spring 2022, face-to-face, 3 cr.)

AGRI 310
AGRI 310

Where did our favorite drink (coffee) come from? Do you know that each cup you consume connects you with the poor women and men farmers in developing countries who grow and deliver this global favorite? Coffee is supreme in the world and there is so much to learn about it in terms of cultural history, migration of coffee consumption, employment, economic-injustice, and much more. The course begins from the original home of the coffee plant (Ethiopia). Then, we will expand our studies to selected countries known for their coffee production, which will lead to comparative analyses across countries. Along with readings and documentaries we will have presentations by domestic and international experts. The highlight of the course focuses on experiential opportunities including participation in a coffee ceremony at an Ethiopian restaurant and learning about coffee quality roasting from a local roaster, both in Lincoln.
This course is an expanded version of the original virtual travel course taught a year ago and, covered by the Omaha World Herald.
