Professor Anthony Schutz led a group of students on a tour of western Nebraska in October. Stops included portions of the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District's system, visits with rural practitioners, and discussions with farmers and USDA officials.
Professor Schutz also had students accompany him to the American Agricultural Law Association Symposium in Portland. 2Ls Nathan Collier and Hannes Zetzsche and 1L Jaqueline Newland attended the weekend-long symposium at the end of October. Schutz spoke about Environmental Law Issues affecting Agriculture. In addition, he was noted in national media for questioning a USDA speaker about the underlying basis for their recent de-regulatory efforts: https://www.politico.com/newsletters/morning-agriculture/2018/10/29/farm-bill-to-test-trumps-deregulatory-push-393023.
Professor Schutz also organized the fall visit of approximately 40 undergraduate Rural Law Opportunities Program students from Chadron State College, Wayne State College, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The students observed law school classes, attended oral arguments before the Eighth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and attended an undergraduate course on law and the legal profession, where Professor Schutz talked about agricultural law as an example of how law is used to improve the human condition at international, national, state, local, and individual levels.
