Honors Math Courses During Spring 2022!

Are you interested in Mathematics and looking to dive a little deeper? During the Spring 2022 semester, the Math Department will be offering MATH 208H: Honors Calculus III and MATH 314H: Honors Linear Algebra.

Why choose an Honors Math course over a non-Honors Math course?

• Honors Math courses are normally smaller in size than non-Honors courses, which means that you will have more potential for one-on-one time with the course instructor.

• The students in Honors Math courses chose to the course based on their interest in Mathematics, which makes the atmosphere of the Honors Math courses different.

• Honors Math courses don’t normally cover more course material than non-Honors Math courses, and it is possible for an Honors Math course to have the same cumulative final exam as the non-Honors Math course sections.

• Honors Math courses go into more depth about the Math content being covered, and this can include more detailed explanations of why something works like it does, a proof explaining the content, or an application to more advanced Mathematics. The result is that course content is a little less computational and a little more theoretical.

• Honors Math courses could include a project of some kind that wouldn’t normally be included in a non-Honors course section.

Why Honors Calculus III?

Because multi-variable calculus is a foundational subject used in a range of subjects, including physics and engineering, students taking MATH 208H: Honors Calculus III will be better prepared for both advanced mathematics courses and for uses of this material in the sciences, engineering, and business. MATH 208H meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 9:30-10:20 am for the Spring 2022 semester.

Why Honors Linear Algebra?

Because linear algebra is a foundational subject used across advanced mathematics and most of its applications, students in engineering, business, science, and math will all be better prepared for their advanced courses if they take MATH 314H: Honors Linear Algebra. MATH 314H meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:30-10:20 am for the Spring 2022 semester.

Prerequisites

All Honors Math courses require students to be in good standing with the University Honors program or to have permission from the Math Department prior to enrolling. Students granted permission to enroll in an Honors Math course for the Fall 2021 semester will likely be granted permission to enroll in an Honors Math course for the Spring 2022 semester. Both MATH 208H: Honors Calculus III and MATH 314H: Honors Linear Algebra expect students to have completed MATH 107: Calculus II or MATH 107H: Honors Calculus II with C, Pass, or better grades.
