Register now for the Fall 2018 Teaching and Learning Symposium sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor as part of the campus commitment to teaching and learning excellence. The Symposium will be held Friday, October 19, 2018, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Nebraska Innovation Campus Conference Center. Check-in begins at 12:15 p.m.

Keynote Presenter, Peggy Brickman, Professor of Plant Biology at the University of Georgia, will give an interactive keynote focused on group work strategies:

Are Students Right to Perceive Group Work as a Waste of Their Time? Evidence That All Students Learn Better When They Collaborate:

College faculty are increasingly abandoning the traditional mode of delivering content in lectures to incorporate more active learning that encourages students to work in groups with their peers to solve problems and learn through collaboration and exploration. Group work and collaboration can profoundly increase students’ motivation and achievement, but instructors confess that they rarely adhere to procedures to insure equity and shared contributions required for true collaboration. This seminar will review research recommendations for effective procedures to plan, monitor, and intervene so that students of diverse abilities and backgrounds can all benefit from collaborative group work no matter the class size or discipline.

Four 50-minute break-out sessions will follow the keynote, providing participants choices for delving into a range of topics and the opportunity to interact with others interested in improving teaching at UNL.

1. Speed Session: Five Hints & Helps for Fellow Faculty
2. Generation Z: Who are they and how can we serve them?
3. Best Practices in ACE Assessment
4. Action Research: Two Methodology Examples to Document Effective Teaching and Student Learning

The poster session will feature the many campus units that support teaching and learning. Attendees may view the posters and visit with presenters immediately before the keynote and during the post-keynote break.
