As the Digital Learning Center has experienced a significant increase in demand during finals week, it is introducing a policy update to ensure efficient use of the facilities. Starting in the fall, the DLC will implement a new rule: multiple attempt exams will no longer be accepted during finals week. This change aims to allow more students to successfully reserve exam times, addressing the challenges posed by increased demand. We recognize that this modification may require adjustments in how exams are prepared and administered. We are committed to supporting faculty and students as they adapt to this policy.
To maximize students' opportunities to test during the increased demand of finals week, the DLC advises faculty to utilize the full examination period, which starts the Saturday before finals week and ends on Friday at noon. Expanding the exam window provides students with more chances to secure a time slot. If the DLC reaches its capacity and an exam cannot be scheduled during finals week, faculty have several alternatives. These include modifying a Canvas Quiz to enable Respondus Monitor and disabling IP filters to allow remote testing with Respondus LockDown Browser. Alternatively, faculty may instruct students to use their laptops in a supervised setting with a password-protected Canvas Quiz, eliminating the need for Respondus LockDown Browser.
Faculty should also be aware of an upcoming hours change for the DLC this fall. Due to a change in Library building hours, the DLC is required to alter their open hours. The changes are minimal and include:
- Fridays and Saturdays will close at 5pm (changed from 6pm)
- Sunday hours are now 1pm to 8pm (changed from 1pm-10pm)
- Regular weekday hours remain unchanged, 8am to 10pm
Finally, the DLC will be offering several training sessions for faculty this fall on topics related to online testing technologies. Here are the upcoming Zoom sessions that regular DLC users may be interested in attending:
- So, I Keep Hearing about New Quizzes Sept. 4, 1-2 p.m. – In this session, learners will get a crash course on New Quizzes, Canvas's next generation quizzing platform. Presenters will explore how New Quizzes is different than Classic Quizzes, detail the question types that are available, and provide an overview of how settings and accommodations work. Register online.
- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: What UNL Faculty Really Think about New Quizzes Oct. 14, 2-3 p.m. – At this session, a moderator will have a semi-structured conversation with four UNL faculty members about their experiences with New Quizzes. Faculty will discuss how they have been using New Quizzes and talk about their honest opinions of the tool. Register online.
- Respondus Nov. 12, 10-11 a.m. – In this session, a representative from Respondus will explore how faculty can leverage Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor to protect exam integrity in and out of the classroom. This session will include a demo of advanced settings, as well as a discussion of best practices. Register online.
For additional support or questions regarding the new policy, faculty can contact Miranda McCown, the Digital Learning Center Exam Commons operations manager, at mmccown2@nebraska.edu.
