Jason Bruges kicks off this year's Hyde Lecture Series

The College of Architecture is excited to announce internationally renowned designer Jason Bruges, founder of Jason Bruges Studio, known as a pioneer in the space between art, architecture, technology and interactive design, will be giving the first Hyde lecture of the season titled “An Insight into Jason Bruges Studios” at 4 p.m., September 24 via Zoom Webinar.

Bruges is a multidisciplinary artist, based in London. A master of light and kinetic art, he uses a high-tech, mixed-media palette to explore spectacle, time-based interventions and dynamic immersive experiences. His artworks are moments of theatre that transform in response to their surroundings and connect people with their environments.

For this lecture, Bruges presents a range of his projects including some of his most recent investigations into urban scale robotic interventions. He provides insight into the context for his work, describing his motivations to create moments of theatre that engage people with their environments. Guiding us through his development process, and methods for iterating and testing, he describes the make-up of his multidisciplinary team and explains how this adds to the melting pot of successful collaboration. Unpicking his avenues of inspiration, Bruges unearths his focus for the future and his endeavors to foster active participation and positive change through his art.

Bruges studied architecture at the Bartlett - University College London, then worked at Foster + Partners and Imagination. In 2002, he set up Jason Bruges Studio where he works with a talented team to deliver integrated, public art projects world- wide. Bruges is a passionate educator and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Media Architecture Award for his ground-breaking, urban-scale, robotic intervention, Where Do We Go From Here?, for Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

This presentation is part of the College of Architecture’s 2021-2022 Hyde Lecture Series featuring speakers from across disciplines that are united under the common theme of “Emerging Opportunities for Equality in Planning and Design.” The series focuses on the anticipated “new normal” and looks to draw insight and explore what solutions planners and designers can offer in the Post-Pandemic Future.

The college’s Hyde Lecture Series is a long-standing, endowed, public program. Each year the college hosts compelling speakers in the fields of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning that enrich the ongoing dialog around agendas which are paramount to the design disciplines and our graduates.
