Reporter I - The Daily Nonpareil (Council Bluffs, IA)

A Reporter I uses basic facts to develop compelling, timely and well-sourced stories that accurately reflect the nature of the community or beat the reporter covers. This should be a combination of daily stories and projects undertaken in conjunction with a supervisor. Reporter I, an entry-level position, also ensures that photo and graphics assignments are filed early in the information gathering process and that presentation elements are considered for each story. One to two years experience at a smaller newspaper or college newspaper is preferred. Internships at larger papers and strong college newspaper experience will be highly considered.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform and execute all work practices in a safe manner. Constant safety awareness is mandatory for all employees.
2. Completes work in a timely manner and meets deadlines.
3. Write stories clearly with little need for editing.
4. Takes note of errors and does not repeat them.
5. Spells correctly.
6. Pays close attention to beat, visits offices and officials covered on a daily basis and is seldom beaten by the competition.
7. Initiates and coordinates responses to sources, readers and other community members through email and phone calls.
8. Accepts story assignments, whether for news or special sections, and completes them as quickly as possible.
9. Communicates frequently with editors and other newsroom staff to coordinate plans.
10. Can be reached by phone by editors or paginators within a reasonable amount of time to address concerns.
11. Works with others to develop visual and multimedia elements to go with stories.
12. Takes an interest in digital offerings, which are included but not limited to our website and social media.
13. Produces at least one story for the newspaper each day.
14. Takes clear photographs, with good composition, and gets information and names for captions.
15. Valid driver’s license and insurance required.
16. On-site, regular and reliable attendance is required.
17. Safely drive to and from various locations.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to follow all Company policies and procedures including but not limited to attendance standards.
2. An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
3. Must have exceptional spelling and writing abilities.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone, and through electronic means.
5. Ability to write copy in accordance with good grammar, accurate spelling and AP style.
6. Ability to budget time and meet deadlines.
