CoJMC is looking to hire THREE (3) Peer Mentors/Teaching Assistants for JOMC 100/First Year Experience for the Fall 2019 semester. This course is taught by the academic advisors in the CoJMC. All incoming CoJMC freshmen are required to take JOMC 100. The course covers everything from helping students discover their purpose for pursing higher education, to taking ownership of their education while maintaining engagement, relationships and well-being.
There will be one teaching assistant for each JOMC 100 section. The teaching assistants will be responsible for one to two hours of prep each week and then they must attend their JOMC 100 section. This would average a total of three hours per week at $9/hour.
As a mentor/teaching assistant, you will:
Manage attendance:
> Create/copy attendance sheets each week
> Ensure all students turn them in
> Keep track of weekly attendance
Assist with weekly class preparation:
> Copy handouts
> Assist in contacting speakers, other campus resources
> Assist with technology needs
> Creating slides, PowerPoints, etc., under instruction from advisors
Provide ideas/suggestions for creative lessons when appropriate:
> Share ideas from personal first-year student perspective to assist advisors in providing effective and valuable lessons
> General administrative support to one advisor/instructor when necessary
Possibility of co-teaching some lessons (TBD). Serve as a mentor for incoming CoJMC freshmen in the course. Provide guidance when appropriate.
Qualifications:
> Must be declared a CoJMC major
> Must be a sophomore, junior or senior
> Would be preferable if you have taken JOMC 100
JOMC 100 sections for Fall 2019:
> Tuesday 9:30-10:20am in ANDN 15 with Jill Arth
> Wednesday 12:30-1:20pm in ANDN 15 with Andrea Gaghagen
> Thursday 9:30-10:20am in ANDN 15 with Anne McConkey
Each class will have around 75 students.
