Research Communications Specialist - UNL (Lincoln, NE)

The Research Communications Specialist supports the Research Communication’s team’s efforts to promote research, scholarly and creative activity at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This position has primary responsibility for overseeing and creating content for the Office of Research and Economic Development’s social media channels, with the goal of communicating the importance, impact and potential of research at Nebraska. The communications specialist is responsible for ensuring effective messaging across multiple channels, developing content that aligns with the university’s research goals, and follows best practices as determined by University Communication. This position will execute communication projects that support lectures, conferences, workshops and other special events hosted by ORED. Key event-related duties include writing and editing promotional materials, and developing social media posts to promote events and drive attendance. This role’s additional responsibilities include writing and editing content for newsletters, websites, reports, newsletters and other projects as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications or related field plus 3 years of relevant professional communications experience in newsroom, university, agency, public relations/communications or nonprofit environments required. Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal communications skills necessary. Demonstrated experience with managing social media channels in a professional setting essential. Must be flexible, adaptable and have demonstrated ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects. Must have thorough knowledge of Associated Press style and news writing standards.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in science writing or communicating about research, scholarly and creative activity for lay audiences is desired. Professional communications experience in a university setting helpful. Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, social media management tools, and web content management systems is preferred. Photography and/or videography skills are helpful.
